A federal judge has intervened to grant families more time to apply for Texas's controversial Education Freedom Accounts program. U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman issued an order on Tuesday extending the application deadline from March 15 to March 31, 2024.
The two-week extension comes as the state prepares to launch this pilot school voucher initiative. The program, a cornerstone of Governor Greg Abbott's education agenda, will provide eligible families with state-funded accounts to pay for private school tuition and other educational expenses outside the public school system.
Initially approved by the state legislature last year, the program has faced significant legal and political opposition. Proponents argue it offers crucial educational choices for parents, particularly those with children in underperforming schools. Critics contend it diverts essential public funding away from the state's already strained public school districts.
The judge's ruling provides a brief reprieve for families navigating the new application process. State officials are now required to accept and process submissions for the limited number of available spots through the end of the month. The extension does not affect the program's scheduled start for the upcoming academic year.
